CROATIA AND MONTENEGRO

DUBROVNIK:  OUR EXCLUSIVE INSIDER’S FULL DAY COASTAL TOUR

This morning your English-speaking Churchill & Turen guide and driver will be waiting to meet you on the pier at 9:00 a.m. to begin your excursion to the Peljesac Peninsula by private vehicle.  Explore the countryside and villages in a way that is impossible to do on a large bus tour and experience an area best known for its vineyards and oysters, farmed in the town of Ston.  Your private guide will share insights on both the history and contemporary life of local residents, truly an “Insider’s View” of Croatia.

Enjoy a walking tour of the town of Ston before embarking on a traditional fishing boat for a private tour of an oyster farm.  During the tour, sample the oysters made famous during the Roman Empire for being a great aphrodisiac. From this vantage point, it’s possible to appreciate the medieval architecture of the Ragusan Republic.  First colonized by the Greeks, later by the Romans and Byzantines and in the middle Ages often changed hands between the Venetian and Ragusan Republics, the peninsula shares a similar story with other coastal settlements.  Ston was once a military fort and more than 3 miles of walls extending from Veliki Ston, the historic center of the town, to St. Michael’s Mount and to Mali Ston remain today. The 41 towers, 7 bastions, and 2 forts make this one of the largest and most intriguing defensive structures in the Adriatic region.

Continue on to the wine cellar of the Matusko Family to enjoy a private wine tasting of Plavac Mali and Dingac wines. The Matusko winery specializes in high-quality wines from the Mali Plavac grapes grown on the peninsula and the Korcula Island.

Estimated Price per person: $975 USD (based on 2 people traveling together) #DCTOE

HVAR: HIKING THE ‘LOST VILLAGES’ OF HVAR

There are some lovely, authentic villages up in the hills above Hvar. But you have to hike to get there, along a medieval trail. This is for those who enjoy hiking – this is not a casual walk or, as we say in Naples, a “sss” (slow senior shuffle). Along the way, you will learn about local medicinal herbs and you will meet a lavender “farmer” who will discuss the benefits and tradition of the plant. Our carefully selected hiking guide will be with you for the entire four hour experience.

HVAR: HVAR BY BIKE

This is a wonderful bike route for those who have been on a bicycle since their 16th birthday. The full day program (approx.. 8 hours) begins in Stari Grad with a fairly easy ride along the town’s long promenades. It then moves out into the countryside where some hills are encountered. We’ve set this up so that riders have a choice of itineraries but everyone ends up at a local farm that produces a high quality range of products. Fully guided throughout – of course.

HVAR: HVAR COMPLETE

You will see it all on this very private full day (approx. 8 hours) journey that will begin with an exploration of the monasteries and the marinas of this seaside town. You will climb  to the Spanjol Fortress for views out along the Adriatic and then journey along the coast stopping for a wine tasting once you reach the small, select wine region.

SPLIT:  A TASTE OF REAL LIFE IN THE CROATIOAN COUNTRYSIDE

Travel overland by private vehicle a short distance to a small local village to discover the elegance of Mediterranean cuisine as you are welcomed to lunch in the home of a local family.  Enjoy a traditional homemade aperitif such as travarica or prosecco with dried figs.  Lunch will be served using home grown produce, olive oil, local spices and fresh local ingredients.  Experience the traditional way of life in Split while forging new friendships and engaging in pleasant conversation with your host over a glass of Croatian wine.
